Impactful Developments in ILWU Labor Negotiations: Strike Notice for July 22, 9am Cancelled

On July 18, 2023, the ILWU Canada Longshore Caucus declined to accept the Mediators' Recommended Terms, leading to the resumption of their planned strike at 16:30 on the same day. Previously, the union had suspended picketing, following the request of the Minister of Labour, in order to consider a collective agreement proposed by a mediator. However, after a two-day meeting, the ILWU expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed deal and decided to pursue a negotiated agreement instead.

Subsequently, the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) lodged a formal complaint with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), alleging that the ILWU had initiated the strike without the requisite 72-hour notice, rendering the work stoppage, scheduled for July 18 at 16:30, as illegitimate.

In response to the CIRB's ruling, the ILWU conveyed their intention to appeal, while also affirming their commitment to respect the board's decision. They subsequently issued a new notice, setting the effective date for the strike on July 22 at 9:00 am. However, in a subsequent press release, the ILWU withdrew the strike notice without providing further clarification.
