Canadian Retaliatory Tariffs Against U.S. Goods Effective Sept. 8

In response to the United States imposing a 50% tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods effective August 22, the Government of Canada has imposed matching counter-tariffs on selected U.S. products.

Effective 12:01 a.m. on September 8, 2026, Canada applies 15%, 25%, and 50% tariffs to approximately $27.6 billion in imports from the United States. Individual tariff rates generally match the applicable U.S. tariff rate on the same goods.

The affected products include key sectors such as:

• Steel and metal products
• Dairy products
• Appliances
• Agricultural equipment
• Pulp and paper
• Electronics

The counter-tariffs apply only to goods originating in the United States, based on Canada's country-of-origin marking rules under CUSMA.

U.S.-origin goods that were already in transit to Canada when the countermeasures came into effect are exempt from the new tariffs.

Importers should review the specific Canadian tariff classification of their products, as eligibility and applicable tariff rates are determined at the tariff-item level.
