European Commission fights drug trafficking in ports

On 25 January 2024, the European Commission, in collaboration with the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council, Member States, port authorities, European associations, and various EU agencies such as Europol and EMCDDA, unveiled the "European Port Alliance." This public-private partnership is designed to combat drug trafficking and criminal infiltration in European ports, addressing the rise in cocaine seizures and vulnerabilities exploited by criminal networks. The alliance's objectives include mobilizing customs authorities, strengthening law enforcement activities, and promoting public-private cooperation to bolster port security. Following the launch, joint commitments will be made, and annual ministerial meetings will be convened to address challenges and monitor progress. This initiative aligns with the EU's broader strategy to combat organized crime and drug trafficking, as outlined in the EU Roadmap against drug trafficking and organized crime.
