Panama Canal's August 2023 Operations Report Shows Improved Vessel Queues

On September 8th, 2023, the Panama Canal Authority issued its Monthly Canal Operations Summary for August. The report highlights positive developments in the queue of vessels awaiting transit through the canal. At present, there are 108 vessels in the queue, a notable decrease of 20% compared to the previous week's count of 135. This reduction is consistent with the typical seasonal variation expected during this time of year.

The Panama Canal implemented water-saving measures earlier in the year due to an extended dry season and the presence of the El Niño phenomenon. These measures included a reduction in the maximum draft levels for Neopanamax locks to 13.4 meters (44 feet), down from the previous year's average of 15.2 meters (50 feet). Additionally, the daily transit capacity of the locks was decreased to an average of 32 transits per day, compared to the previous average of 36.

While these measures and the increased demand for vessel transits have impacted waiting times, it is worth noting that this heightened demand underscores the maritime industry's continued preference for the Panama Canal as the preferred route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

As the peak season at the Panama Canal approaches, and assuming that diminished rainfall patterns persist as projected, it is anticipated that the vessel queue may exceed typical levels. However, the measures enacted by the Canal Authority have proven to be effective in managing these challenges.

The Panama Canal Authority strongly encourages its customers to make reservations for transits, as this allows for a secure spot in the queue. For vessels without reservations, transit is accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
