U.S. Imposes Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China; Mexico's Tariffs Delayed After Border Agreement

February 3, 2025

On February 1, 2025, the White House announced that President Donald J. Trump would impose new tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, citing a national emergency related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl. A 25% tariff will be applied to most imports from Canada and Mexico, with Canadian energy products receiving a reduced 10% tariff. Imports from China will face a 10% tariff. These tariffs are set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on February 4, 2025, and will apply to goods entering the U.S. after this time, unless they were already in transit before February 1, 2025, in which case they are exempt if certified by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

However, on February 3rd, 2025, as the tariffs on Mexico were about to take effect, President Trump announced a one-month delay for Mexico. This decision followed an agreement where Mexico committed to deploying 10,000 National Guard members to secure its northern border in an effort to curb illegal drug trafficking. In return, the U.S. promised to take action to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons into Mexico. This move came after a phone conversation between U.S. President Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, just hours before the tariffs were scheduled to be imposed.
